/ I A / MIX 07: Grievous Angel

0 Comments - Add comment Written on 23-Dec-2009 by bigtusks

Grievous Angel has supplied us with a mix of triple deeper 3:2 techy dubstep for us. It's a nod to his earlier productions that were 3:2 techno - and fantastic from what I've heard. This one's got us particularly hyped, seeing as Grievous has spent mot of the year defining himself as a certified badman. Just look at the tracklisting, more Scuba and Ramadanman than you could shake stick at, and 2009 classics from Pangaea, Cooly G and Kode 9.

"For a long time I’ve wanted to do another techy mix. I did one last summer called TechDub. Vinyl mix of dubstep that had strong vibes of house, techno and electro. Since then I’ve been collecting a lot of other stuff on the same tip, especially stuff with a 3:2 rhythm to it. Most of the dubs I got have come out now like Scuba’s Klinik which is fantastic, but Paul sent me another couple of techy specials, remixes of Dfrnt and Si Begg that are wicked. Dunno if they’re exclusive but you don’t see ‘em about much. So there’s a load of techy 3:2 gear to start, kicking off with my remix of Narcossist’s Metronome, which I love, and my favourite track off the first album, the discomix of Culture Killer with the Cuttty Ranks vocal, some Scuba stuff, some techy garage stuff, and a load of trance-y, progg-y percussive techy dubstep – Revenue, Infinity Is Now, Blimey and stuff like that. Then a load of dubby, techy 4x4 gear at the end with funky mixed into it.

IA made this mix on the weekend when London froze. The mix was produced using vinyl only. It contains some of our favourite songs from 2009, as well as many other classics. The mix is warm and especially deep, incorporating the deep sounds of Julius Steinhoff, MCDE, Omar-S and Christopher Rau. As it progresses expect to be hyped up to Circus Company levels and overwhelmed by Dettinger. We've called the mix 'Winter', we hope you enjoy it.

/ I A / MIX 05: Jesse Futermann

0 Comments - Add comment Written on 18-Dec-2009 by Tom

Jesse Futermann is a musician from Toronto. He's just turned 18 and his music, so far is very promising. Jesse's been in contact with IA since the summer of 2009. He emailed us when we were in post Melt festival mode in Berlin. His email to us was simple. "I'm 17 years old and do instrumental whatever you want to call it. My name is Jesse Futermann maybe you would like to hear it and if you like it go, 'Yo this guy is pretty cool', please do not go "this guy is not cool", because I am young, therefore my heart is frail and I have not experienced the harsh realities of planet earth yet".

Jesse provided two links, one to download his latest songs and the other to a recent feature on 'Yes Yes Y'All'. The feature was very brief; it consisted of a song called 'Angels' with some artwork done by his friend Chelsea and a few words from Jesse. "Gilles Peterson really liked my music for a couple months and played it like 3 times or something. I also enjoy Synthesizers and Batman".

I sent back an email to Jesse, "Yes, we do like your music, a lot!" We couldn't believe that this was actually from a 17 year old. Jesse's age is something that constantly interferes with his music and success. People don't respect him enough, they promise him things, but never actually follow through with them. However he told us "I don't want to be just judged by my age, but I do because I'm not 100% confident in my work."

Jesse's been pigeon holed into many genres. Someone asked him, "Your from that beat dimension, right?" hmmm. He doesn't know what genre he's in, it doesn't matter to him. "I really don't know what it is, it's up to the listener...all I know is that it comes from somewhere inside of me, it's reflective of my current feelings and experiences. If anything the listener should decide. Naming it would be unfair, I just make it." Jesse listens to all types of music, especially jazz, "I became very interested in jazz at 16...I would spend all my money on records. Sounds from Impulse, Strata East, 60's Blue Note and Blackjazz really helped me understand how limitless a genre jazz is."

Jesse uses Ableton and a host of sounds to make his music. 'Angels' features vocals from Ella Fitzgerald's 'Angel Eyes'. Ultimately it's just the beginning of his beatmaking career. "Apart from samples I use a lot of synths for effects, strings, basslines or whatever. My dream is to work with analogue musicians...I have a lot of ideas revolving around working with real musicians...full string sections, more layered pieces." Untill he does find some musicians; I guess he'll have to make do with the support of his friend Ben Thomas aka Singing Statues and the breakbeat, hip-hop, electro man Moonstar. Ben has opened up Jesse to a lot of music and film, "Ben has been a huge influence on my sound, I'm a huge fan of his work. Moonstar has also been a big help to my music...he's really helped how I look at music."

I think Jesse's music is very good and I hope to hear more from him. He already has label interest so I hope he'll release some of his music soon. For now we're offereing a free download of a song by Jesse called 'In Flight'. Enjoy the mix and I'll leave you with a few words from the man himself.

"This mix was made at my house, and also at my buddy Evan's house (he also helped me with some of the ideas and later transitions). The inspiration for the mix came through re-visiting a lot of old ninja tune records, and hearing that the sound of spoken word, layered over funky beats and rhythms. Some of the stuff on the mix is re-edited and some parts of the mix have a combination of more than one song playing at once. The photograph I provided for my mix was taken by my good friend Vince Malik. I hope you enjoy the mix as much as I had making it. This one is for your Sunday morning."

/ I A / MIX 04: Secondo

2 Comments - Add comment Written on 21-Oct-2009 by Tom

This exclusive / I A / MIX comes from Secondo aka Radovan Scasacia. Radovan, joint founder of London's Dreck Records, employs a unique approach to creating music. Secondo is one of his guises, you can also check out Radovan's even more experimental sound project AM / PM. Under the Secondo moniker Radovan carefully slices up minute fragments of sound, be it jazz, disco or funk and rearranges each element on his palette of sound to compose what can only be called an intriguing mix of splice and funk.

We caught up with Radovan earlier this year to find out what was happening with Dreck Records. Some of you may have noticed a slight quiet patch for the label, but rest assured Dreck have some fine tracks up their sleeves to release early 2010 distributed through Rubadub. If you can't wait till then, I recommend you head down to Ritmo at Old Streets Life Bar. You can catch Secondo and his motley crew perform every third Saturday of every month spinning out the finest splice and funk in London. I'll leave you with a few words from Radovan himself, enjoy the mix.

"I've recorded this mix two nights after our monthly Ritmo party, many records on there came straight out of that night's record bag. I was definitely still in Ritmo-mode while recording. The mix happened quite spontaneously, without thinking too hard beforehand what I was going to play. I quite enjoy recording a mix this way as it's similar to the situation in the club, with the one big difference that at home you've got your entire record collection at your disposal, which doesn't necessarily make it easier. All the tracks are played from vinyl, I still can't work those CDJs out..."

/ I A / MIX 03: Lusine

1 Comment - Add comment Written on 29-Sep-2009 by Tom

This exclusive live / I A / MIX comes from Lusine. Lusine is the work of Seattle's finest electronic maestro Jeff Mcllwain. Jeff has been producing his visceral melodic abstract electronic music since graduating from CalArts in 1998. He studied 20th Century music and sound design for music and film. 2009 celebrates his second release under Ann Arbour's most iconic label 'Ghostly International'.

'A Certain Distance' offers the listener a dynamic shift from Lusine's trademarked abstract less accessible tones. Ultimately it's a much more pop-y sound and accessible album. It's still largely abstract but warmer than his previous releases. 2004's 'Serial Hodgepodge' was essentially more clinical and un-worldly. It has its good tunes, but is unquestionably for the trained audiophile. 'A Certain Distance' has a wider range and varied character than the latter.

This mix was recorded live from Berlin's most notorious local haunt, Berghain. The mix predominantly features songs from 'A Certain Distance' most notably 'Double Vision' almost a soundtrack for transition, as if you're travelling away from the familiar bleak urban surroundings to a more tranquil landscape. Of course the highlights of the mix are the three untitled and entirely live tracks. The mix is only available from Inverted Audio for the next 3 weeks, so don't hang around, get it. Christopher Rau MIX 02 shrunk
This exclusive / I A / MIX comes from Christopher Rau. Originally from Bavaria, his father, a trained pianist, intoduced him to percussion and piano during his childhood. Chris now lives and works in Hamburg. He's no stranger to the deep house scene, his local hangouts involve the well respected Smallville Records run by local DJ Lawrence. Chris also co-runs the Hamburg and Munich based record label Dérive Schallplatten, alongside co-owner Björnski Maximilian.

I only discovered Chris 2 months ago, through Dérive's first release 'Dérive Vol. 1'. Despite the labels brief existence their first three track EP delivers a deep variety of Techno and house from Benjamin Brunn, Achim März and Christopher Rau. No doubt their follow up release expected this year will be another fine production.

Rau presents us a beautiful example of deep house music. It lives up to its name and creates an extremly relaxed vibe. It suits every emotion, a solid deep bass line sets the path whilst a charming jazzy sample brings you down to a dreamy and elicit vibe. Chris prodcues his music with a laptop, "tilmans motu" and a few controllers. His mix is predominantly vinyl with a couple of tracks thrown in on CD, which I assume are his own productions . In simple terms, this mix is a great addition to anyones music library, enjoy the mix.

MIX 01

This exclusive / I A / MIX comes from Singing Statues aka Ben Thomas, Jackhigh, Bnjmin 141 and Rewolf. We've been listening to Ben's music for a while now and this is his latest project. In an exclusive interview with IA, Ben told us "I finally feel like I've settled on a name and direction". If you havn't downloaded Ben's 5 track Untitled EP get it HERE. This mix is a reflection of Ben and ultimately what he's listening to. Just one thing, don't expect a wonky techno mix.

"The inspiration for the mix was to include tracks that are influencing me at the moment, I'm finding myself drawn towards eastern and ambient sounds more and more. I always look for a sense of imagery or feeling in music, for me these tracks all evoke different feelings. I find that the darkest tracks can also contain the most light, this is what I'm trying to achieve in my own music, both polar opposites."

Music: Introducing: Svpreme Fiend (Exclusive Mix)

2 Comments - Add comment Written on 27-Apr-2009 by Pariah

"A lot of people assume that I'm trying to be a carbon copy of Burial but that I'm not good at it because I don't go out of my way to fill my music with subtle details and whatnot, but that's not really what I was going for to begin with (not that I don't love that about his tunes). I'm not really trying to impress people with my production work...  I'm just trying to make people feel the emotions that I'm trying to convey.

On first hearing the music of New York based producer Svpreme Fiend, there is one comparison that instantly leaps to mind: Burial (Indeed, he says that besides the late, great J. Dilla, Burial is his biggest influence). Texturally, their music shares alot of common ground. The haunting vocals, deep pads and lo-fi production values found in Mr Bevan's work are also present in Svpreme Fiend's tunes. However, his music is by no means a "rip off" of Burial's and, no matter what the similarites are between these two artists, it has its own very unique feel to it.

I think the key difference is  in the atmosphere that it creates. Svpreme Fiend's music takes me to a warmer, more comforting place. The insecurity and lonliness that eminates from Burial tunes such as "Untrue" and "Distant Lights" or the deep sadness of "Near Dark" isn't felt with Svpreme Fiend. Sure, the music is still melancholic but the lead melody lines in tunes such as "Prover" or "Assurer" are nothing short of uplifting. The stripped down percussion, placed low in the mix, is made up of clicks, pops and heavily filtered snare sounds. It gives the tunes a certain organic quality to them: the drums in "Affecter" remind me alot of Mount Kimbie. Another similarity with Burial is that the rhythms are often built up around the ghosts of 2-step but this gives the tunes a real swing and bump to them. In a time when a lot underground electronic music is becoming saturated with sub-standard releases made solely to please the DJ and the "raving crew", these kind of raw, honest and achingly beautiful sounds have never been more essential.

He was kind enough to put together a nice little mix for us which we urge you to check out.

You can download the mix by clicking here.
