RUMOUR HAS BEEN QUASHED - Panasonic have issued the following: "As a major global business, Panasonic keeps all of its operations under constant review. However, there are no current plans to discontinue the Technics brand and the production of Technics turntables." - SOURCE

Take a deep breath....this has to be the most earth shattering news of all time! The Panasonic Corporation have announced that production of the world famous Technics SL-1200 and SL-1210 direct drive turntables will stop at the end of February 2010.

Since the name Technics, pronouced 'techniques', was launched in 1965 for domestic premium loudspeakers, they have set the standard for high end audio equipment. In 1969, they introduced the SP-10, the first direct-drive model for the professional market, and in 1971 the SL-1100 for the consumer market.

The SL-1100 was the predecessor to the SL-1200 which, as the upgraded SL-1200 MK2, became a widely used turntable by DJs. The SL-1200 MK2 was a robust machine and incorporated a pitch control (or vari-speed), and kept the speed constant and the speed variability low, hence why it was adopted universally by 99% of all DJs and clubs.

In a statement Panasonic announced that they would cease the manufacture of Tehcnics turntables in February 2010, citing an increasing decline in sales as the motivation behind the line’s demise. The Australian arm of Panasonic issued a similar statement today, expressing their disappointment that the brand’s 35 years-and-running legacy was to be put to bed.

“It is a sad day today but due to low sales globally in analogue turntables a decision to stop production has been made on Technics Turntables,” Panasonic spokesman Ian North explained. “For Australia this means we will receive our last shipment in March.”

One thing that is clear is that the digital rollercoaster is showing no signs of slowing down. Technics have been the industry standard for over 35 years with this turntable and the SL-1200 is synonymous with the DJ culture. It has been released and re-released over 9 times with different models and numerous other manufacturers have tried to compete with this deck, but above all, the Technics SL-1200 & Technics SL-1210 are the undisputed number one deck in the world.

I can’t find a copy of the statement on any of Panasonic’s region sites, nor their Technics pages. It’s also unclear what the news means regarding the production of mixers and headphones under the Technics brand.

Recent years have seen a rise in the popularity of digital mixing systems, which either use CD or completely digital MP3-style mixing rather than classic vinyl. These setups are generally easier to transport, less prone to damage and allow for more flexibility in post-processing.The question that pops into my mind is, is this a mean viral marketing stratergy to boost global sales of their turntables? Either way its tragic to hear this news! If you dont own a pair of these iconic tutntables I strongly reccomend you do.

We now welcome a re-mastered Special Edition of this classic release 15 years after it changed the face of techno featuring the unreleased ‘SH-101’ (made during the same sessions) and the very rare ‘Self-Powered’ (which only appeared on the Axis test press),

When first released as a vinyl double-pack ‘Minimal Nation’ not only sounded unlike any other record but also looked like no other, with each track finishing in a locked groove that forced the listener to flick the needle to the next track. Each groove was built from harsh angular elements that when combined created an alien funk not bereft of warmth or soul. A sound so unique that its single spark echoed around the world and took electronic music into new uncharted territory. As Rob Nash noted in The Sunday Times (December 2008) “minimal’s roots go further back, it was invented in 1994, not 2004, and in Detroit, not Berlin. Its inventor was Robert Hood. His 1994 album, Minimal Nation marked the birth of minimal techno.”

To this day Minimal Nation remains the benchmark, the ground zero of ‘minimal’. The first record to conceptually take the Pavlovian Dog’s principle of less is more straight to the dancefloor with its insistent loops and surging funk patterns. As Robert himself concludes, “Minimal Nation is not just a collection of rhythm tracks, but a supernatural work of art realized. I felt a strong sense of urgency to create a body of work that identified with what was placed on my heart, as opposed to what was on my mind. Regardless, of it's diminutive nature, one should never underestimate the neural potency of minimalism.”

This week, For those of you who don't know much about Warp, they are a truly independant indie record label founded by Steve Beckett in Sheffield in 1989. Thanks to FACT MAGAZINE this is what we know about their celebrations so far:

"Throughout this year Warp is planning a raft of celebrations including one-off live events around the world and a series of special new releases. The label will host “Warp 20” events in Paris in May, New York in July, Sheffield in August, London in September and Tokyo in November. Details of the events are yet to be released, although it is known that the Paris leg of Warp 20 will take place at the Cite De La Musique museum on May 8th and 9th, with a line-up featuring Aphex Twin, Andrew Weatherall, Flying Lotus and Pivot. Most of the Warp 20 events will incorporate art installations and film, reflecting Warp's pioneering work in the visual as well musical field. Warp Films is the production company behind a number of successful pictures, most notably Shane Meadows' "Dead Man's Shoes" and "This Is England"."

To put the final touch on Warp's celebrations they are planning to release a 'Warp 20' deluxe box set made up of Warp archive material from some of the label’s most infamous artists. They are also compiling votes from all those dedicated hardcore Warp fans, to create a compilation of the record labels top tracks. To vote for your favourite tracks, click here warp20.net.

2009 will see Warp releasing new albums from the likes of Maximo Park, Grizzly Bear, Prefuse 73 and Tim Exile, Hudson Mohawke and Gonja Sufi. Despite the current troubling times for the music industry Warp remains strong record label, and i'm sure they have plenty of new artists to discover.

<status>Published</status>

Industry News: Bleep.com

Bleep.com have updated their online digital music store. For those of you that have not visited Bleep.com, you truly have been missing out from one of the best mp3 downloading services in the industry.

Steve Beckett, Managing Director of Warp records set up Bleep.com back in 2004. Being one of the first and most innovative music download stores, Bleep has since gained a Digital Music Award for Best Music Store, had over 1.8 million downloads, and cemented a reputation as the best download boutique store catering for passionate music fans.

Bleep offers single track or whole album DRM - free mp3 and FLAC downloads and allows the users to preview tracks before purchase, by streaming 30 second segments at a time, encoded at 90kbps.

All downloads are available as MP3s. Many are encoded in LAME, which is generally believed to be the best mp3 encoding method, offering the best possible quality-to-size ratio available for the standard. Bleep also offers lossless FLAC-encoded versions of some of its downloads, at a premium cost. The first album available as FLAC was Autechre's Untilted album on 18 April 2005. Uncompressed WAV format downloads are also available.

Bleep.com quickly gained enough popularity to receive a nomination for a Webby Award in the music category on 7 May 2004 alongside iTunes, BeatPort, Live365 and musicplasma. In 2006, Bleep passed the million downloads threshold and in October of that year won the UK Digital Music Award for "Best Music Store" beating players such as iTunes, Napster and ThreeMusic.

In November 2008, Bleep merged with its sister store Warpmart. This expansion has enabled Bleep to sell the most cutting edge vinyl, CDs, t-shirts, magazines, event tickets, merchandise, DVDs, and books as well as top quality downloads. As well as Warp, Bleep works closely with over 300 key independent labels such as Domino, XL, Ninja Tune, One Little Indian, k7, Planet Mu, Stones Throw, as well as leaders and distributors of independent film, literature and publishing.

With an extensive selection of added features built with the music lover in mind, the new version of Bleep provides fresh added content, a stronger focus on editorial, an additional catalogue of physical products, a new personal music player and a brand new look & design for 2009. The site will sit on Beta.bleep.com for the next few weeks and you can still access the old Bleep site for a short period of time.

Click here for the new site

Click here for the old site
<status>Published</status>

Industry News: New Ramadanman Mix for Resident Advisor

Hessle Audio have been featured on Resident Advisor as this month's label of the month and Ramadanman has provided them with an exclusive new mix featuring a bunch of old classics and some storming new bits from the likes of Pearson Sound, Compound One, Joker, Untold and Ramadanman himself. As you might have guessed from the cover art and song titles, these tunes have a distinct "wild-west" vibe to them. "Dubstep meets John Wayne? What the fuck?", we hear you cry, but hold your horses, these two tunes are really something special. "Last Saloon Swagger" features Ben Blackmore providing us with some swanky as fuck guitar passages over a rolling, clicking beat with a piano line that sounds like its straight out of a bar in Texas. What's more, Joker lends his trademark pitched-up synths to the fray and with a snare hit that resurrects the ghosts of Groove Chronicles, we've got ourselves an instant classic here. And thats only the first side. On the flip things get slightly more soulful with a tune that features a melancholic harmonica part from Mr. Jo and the re-appearance of that gorgeous piano and 2-step rhythm. The track slowly builds up and up until the final drop when the lurching bassline gets cranked into overload. Beautiful. An essential, truely experimental purchase.

Coleco/Sharmaji feat. This dropped in December and was the perfect way for the label to end the year. The first tune "Campfire Funk" is, at its core, a breaks tune but its drum beat is pretty much where the similarity with that genre ends. Its a piece of music that swells and soars around a looping keys part and the occaisional horn stab while cymbals crash and splash around. "Break You Heart", on the flip, takes the chorus of Feist's "I Feel It All" and puts it underneath a shifting, twisting garage beat to great effect. A bassline that sometimes becomes nothing short of vicious completes this dancefloor orientated slammer. Once again, if you can get hold of it, bag it. Don't sleep.

Hopefully, 2009 should bring even greater things for Soul Motive and all its collaborators. Hopefully no one did a front flip over a table and landing yourself in a pit of glass... no just me then? Anyway, let’s put that to one side and let me tell you of some exciting developments from ze funky techno Kompakt label.

The Cologne based electronic music label, have re-launched their web site, and it looks awesome! Initially it is a lot easier to navigate, and they have given the site a really fresh look. However Kompakt have decided close the much loved Kompakt-MP3 site. This is what Kompakt owner Michael Mayer has to say about the re-launch.

We've been very much looking forward to our website relaunch and hope that you will enjoy KOMPAKT.FM as much as we do. Some may have already noticed the absence of our old mp3 shop KOMPAKT-MP3...no, we haven't forgotten about it - the reason for the shop's closure is completely intentional and probably the most radical part of our relaunch. After four years of pioneering electronic music's digital music shopping, we strongly felt that it was high time to cut down one of the most time consuming aspects of our company in favour of the true reasons why we started KOMPAKT in the first place. That's focussing once again on what we always did best; producing, discovering, distributing and releasing the most exciting music we can imagine.

We anticipate KOMPAKT.FM will be the source you can turn to for the latest (and for that matter, the entire) efforts of our vast exclusive label family, be informed about upcoming shows in your neighbourhood and ingest and share tons of information from and about your favourite artists.

So, lets just hope it all works, and as the name of the new site suggests, hopefully they will have an online radio station. Recordings of recent events, maybe even video's of events and interviews with their artisits.

We wish Kompakt the best of luck with their new site, and look forward to more beautifully constructed electronic music.

<status>Published</status>
