Release: Various Artists 'Tigersushi More G.D.M. X' [Tigersushi]

0 Comments- Add comment Written on 29-Jun-2010 by Tom

Unconditional love of Music, with the idea that there should be no difference between pop and experimental music, knowledge and emotion. Great music for the masses. Or the small Majority like Moodymann once said. That's why we never tried to nail a specific genre spectrum, signing artists in Rock, Electronic Music, DIY is at the core of the Tigersushi system. By DIY we mean the art of the passionate amateur ,a meticulous nerd who likes perfection. The DIY system has been a essential aspect of the rise of electronic music and culture and a form of idealistic resistance. The Underground Resistance.

Tigersushi is 10 years old in 2010, the year of the Tiger. 10 years of activism, love and artistic ambition. To celebrate their anniversary, they're releasing a double compilation: More G.D.M. X, both a retrospective and vision of the future. A heap of unreleased exclusive tracks, some confirmed hits and some personal classics. The first CD (Easy) shows the bright Pop side of Tigersushi while the 2nd CD is mixed by Joakim and explores the more experimental inner workings of the label.

From graphic design to promotion, all creative aspects of Tigersushi are taken care of in-house, as well as most of the music recording with Joakim's studio, a central piece of the Tigersushi system which helped them produce artists such as Panico or Poni Hoax, much as DFA was founded around James Murphy's studio. Despite being very self contained, Tigersushi are responsible for some very exciting collaborations through their history, with Kill The DJ, Optimo, Ivan Smagghe, D*I*R*T*Y, Morpheus and Marc Collin (Nouvelle Vague) amongst others...

One of France’s foremost electronic musicians, Joakim has a background in classical music, US & UK indie rock and jazz. He first discovered electronic music after a schoolfriend left his synthetiser in Joakim's room, later latching onto indie and electronic labels such as Warp and Mo Wax. His first album ‘Tiger Sushi’ was ambient electro-jazz, before he moved onto electronics with ‘Fantômes’ [2003], ‘Monsters and Silly Songs’ [2007] and most recently 'Milky Ways' [2009]  on which he combines post-rock, disco, electronics and, well, silly songs. "Making a pure dance album would almost be like composing an album entirely in F major,” says Joakim. “I jump from one idea to the next. I simply have to try everything and see where it leads." An internationally renowned DJ, as a remixer; he’s recut tunes by Goldfrapp, Royksopp, Tiga, Air and Antena’s ‘Camino Del Sol’ - somehow managing to create some of the biggest club tunes around whilst twisting the originals into new and exciting shapes.

Release: Woodsman 'Mystery Tape EP' [Lefse Records]

Woodsman is an experimental ambient post-psychedelic band based in Denver, CO. The quartet contains two totemic percussionists and two sonic animators who employ electric guitars, feedback loops, and recorded samples to build the dreamy astral soundscapes that define Woodsman's sound. Influenced by hazy mountain passes, the cinema of Stan Brakhage, and early 1970's improvisational recordings by Miles Davis Woodsman has crafted aural offerings that are uniquely their own. Woodsman have kindly offered 'When The Morning Comes' to download for free, it''s deeply atmospheric and is very much my favourite song from the EP, enjoy it.

Washed Out - Feel It All Around

If i was to describe this sound it would probably contain the words 'summer', 'dream' and 'wave'. Very much like his mate 'Toro Y Moi' this dude, Ernest Greene, is making large ripples in this ever-warming pond of 'underground' American synth poppers. He is currently a meteor orbiting the music industry with considerable interest, he has gigs almost every day over the next few months. He mentioned in an interview with 'Sup Magazine 'that he wasn't so keen on performing live, so he's got his work cut out then. Ernest, who is 26, has been making his music in his bedroom in Perry (Georgia) where he now lives with his wife. From what I've gathered he seems to be a mature bloke and i look forward to his future success which i'm assured is a given. Anyway, i think you'll agree that this video is uber summery and has enough sun drenching to accompany the stunning tune. Enjoy.

Toro Y Moi: 'Talamak' [Carpark Records]

Toro Y Moi is 23 year old Chaz Bundick from Columbia, South Carolina.  He makes all type of tunes: from dreamy summer-time pop, to lo-fi indie rock and French-style filter house. His methods are constantly changing and evolving. His lo-fi tunes are a varied assortment of ideas, meandering between funk bass slapped grooves and slowed-down synth pop. "Blessa" is the latter and feels much like a summer's slumber, with its natural instrumentation and swelling vocal patterns beautifully warping like a weak radio transmission.

Heavily influenced by his parent's vinyl and tape collection, he also possesses great admiration for contemporary influences like Animal Collective, Sonic Youth, J Dilla, and Daft Punk. Toro y Moi started in 2001 as a bedroom project but quickly grew into the live performance realm. The songs are born from a plethora of different genres, from freak-folk to R&B to French House—which is heavily influential on Chaz's newest dance alias, Les Sins. Carpark Records have released 'Blessa' a seven inch limited to 500 copies only and will put out two full lengths in 2010.  The first one is called "Causers Of This" and will see the light in February.

Astro Nautico EP #1 - Atlantics

I came accross this randomly. I don't know much about Astro Nautico and this collective of musicians. The EP contains seven tracks, my favourite are both by Kuhn 'Rear Window' and 'Quiet Nights', two fine example of beat making. Almost a hybrid of Flying Lotus and Boxcutter. You can learn more about Astro Nautico and their taste of music HERE. Here are a few words from them about the EP.

"After much deliberation, procrastination, hesitation, frustration and some jubilation, we present you with the long-awaited (short-awaited?) Astro Nautico EP #1 - ATLANTICS. All in-house production, with two tracks each from Obey City, Kuhn and Al Gates (+weed). and the best part is...IT'S FREE MOTHAFUCKA."

S. Maharba - 'Organs' [Sassbologna Records]

0 Comments- Add comment Written on 05-Jan-2010 by Tom

British producer and illustrator S.Maharba of Ipswich Suffolk has been making quite a name for himself in the "underground" hip hop world over the last couple of years dropping several free downloads and a very well received ep on world around records. The beats he produces are dark and spooky most of the time. Sometimes industrial sounding, sometimes gangster, usually instrumental and often scattered with female vocal samples in various languages. Maharba always puts as much emphasis on the visuals accompanying his works as the audio, usually dealing with haunting vintage images of various mysterious women. Ultimately he brings a one-two punch of gloom-laden, atmospheric beats and stunning graphic design to the lineup.

This is without doubt one to watch. I reccomend you check out 'When I Go To Sleep', it's short but keeps demanding a replay. Download ALL of the abums this talented beat maker has created HERE.
