Catcall 'August' [Ivy League]

0 Comments - Add comment Written 2 days ago by Tom

Catcall aka Catherine Kelleher is from Syndney, Australia. You could compare her to M.I.A. or Macromantics but there's defiantly something different to Catcall. 'August' makes you truly sit up and notice. A beautiful, electronic dream, Catcall's glorious voice is showcased brilliantly in a sparkling meander set to a mechanised beat. There's a natural sexiness here; never forced, but still present. This is the music video for 'August' taken from her debut EP 'Anniversary'. The video was directed by Warran Wright for Moop Jaw a collective of directors, designers, illustrators and artist based in Melbourne, Australia and Brooklyn, New York.

Bibio - "Lovers' Carvings" (Letherette Remix) [Warp]

1 Comment - Add comment Written on 15-Feb-2010 by Tom

Bibio will follow the acclaimed success of his Warp debut LP 'Ambivalence Avenue' with an album of new work and remixes entitled 'The Apple & The Tooth'. As well as 4 new unheard Bibio tracks, the album will feature remixes by Clark, Letherette, Wax Stag, Eskmo, Lone and others.

With ‘The Apple and the Tooth’ Bibio once again plays to his strengths by showcasing a whole variety of songs, from lush introspective music collages to beats that could be like some long forgotten disco treasure dusted off. It would be hard to believe this was the work of one producer if it were not for the inimitable vintage imprint on his music.

We've featured Letherette's remix of 'Lovers Carvings', you'll understand why after you've listened to it. It's a complete re-edit of the original track. These boys from Wolverhampton might just be exactly what 2010 needs. Having remixed Machinedrum's 'Late Night Operator' alongside the likes of Jimmy Edgar and Hudson Mohawke, and their recently submitted January mix for BTS Radio, I think you'll agree that this duo are defianantly worth looking out for. This is what BTS Radio had to say about their mix.

"The duo out of Wolverhampton may only have two official remixes to their name, the excellent reshaping of Bibio's "Lovers' Carvings" and Machinedrum's "Late Night Operation", but they've managed to make a scene shaking impression. Further listens on their MySpace page and you hear what could very well be the UK's best kept secret. We're proud to present this guest mix created by Letherette, showcasing a collection of beats and some personal favorites."

Mario Basanov & Vidis feat Jazzu 'I'll Be Gone' [KORB]

0 Comments - Add comment Written on 02-Feb-2010 by Tom

KORB is a freelance based motion design studio founded by CGI director Rimantas Lukavicius. Mario Basanov aka Marijus Adomaitis is a Lithuanian producer. KORB specifies in visual effects, motion graphics and mixed media projects. The video subtedly showcases Lukavicius talents as a CGI producer effortlessly. The video begins with four synchronised shots of a seismograph, the instrument used to measure seismic waves. As the music begins each needle is triggered as different sounds and instruments begin, one for the vocals, one for the drum, and one for the clap and one for the keys, each timed perfectly. As the paper roles by, the red line simulates the sound wave. The red lines become more and more complex and dynamic. Eventually the red ink defies gravity and its molecular state. The ink rises from the paper it globulates as if it was in a vacuum. 'I'll Be Gone' is nothing but a stunning song complemented by this subtle yet intriguing video.

Washed Out - Feel It All Around

1 Comment - Add comment Written on 28-Jan-2010 by NotLoggedInUser

If i was to describe this sound it would probably contain the words 'summer', 'dream' and 'wave'. Very much like his mate 'Toro Y Moi' this dude, Ernest Greene, is making large ripples in this ever-warming pond of 'underground' American synth poppers. He is currently a meteor orbiting the music industry with considerable interest, he has gigs almost every day over the next few months. He mentioned in an interview with 'Sup Magazine 'that he wasn't so keen on performing live, so he's got his work cut out then. Ernest, who is 26, has been making his music in his bedroom in Perry (Georgia) where he now lives with his wife. From what I've gathered he seems to be a mature bloke and i look forward to his future success which i'm assured is a given. Anyway, i think you'll agree that this video is uber summery and has enough sun drenching to accompany the stunning tune. Enjoy.

Download: Peter Van Hoesen 'Variable Parts EP' [Time To Express]

1 Comment - Add comment Written on 21-Jan-2010 by Tom

Variable Parts' four tracks are directly related to Peter Van Hoesen's forthcoming album. The initial sketch of 'Face Of Smoke - Entropic reconstruction' was destined to become a full-length album track. In the end this did not happen, and Peter came back to this track after completion of the album. It was then finished alongside 'Terminal - Markov layout' and 'Strip It, Boost It - Entropic dub', which is basically PVH remixing himself, and 'Second Law', a brand new track based on album source material.

Variable Parts presents a introduction, as well as an extension, to what is to follow in March. These tracks build upon Peter Van Hoesen's signature sound, presenting different perspectives of a musical journey: from slow, dubbed-out beats over solid techno to introspective experiments. Read our review of Van Hoesen's 'Entropic Minus Six'.

Tracklist:
1. Face Of Smoke - Entropic reconstruction
2. Strip It, Boost It - Entropic dub
3. Terminal - Markov layout

Toro Y Moi: 'Talamak' [Carpark Records]

0 Comments - Add comment Written on 13-Jan-2010 by Tom

Toro Y Moi is 23 year old Chaz Bundick from Columbia, South Carolina.  He makes all type of tunes: from dreamy summer-time pop, to lo-fi indie rock and French-style filter house. His methods are constantly changing and evolving. His lo-fi tunes are a varied assortment of ideas, meandering between funk bass slapped grooves and slowed-down synth pop. "Blessa" is the latter and feels much like a summer's slumber, with its natural instrumentation and swelling vocal patterns beautifully warping like a weak radio transmission.

Heavily influenced by his parent's vinyl and tape collection, he also possesses great admiration for contemporary influences like Animal Collective, Sonic Youth, J Dilla, and Daft Punk. Toro y Moi started in 2001 as a bedroom project but quickly grew into the live performance realm. The songs are born from a plethora of different genres, from freak-folk to R&B to French House—which is heavily influential on Chaz's newest dance alias, Les Sins. Carpark Records have released 'Blessa' a seven inch limited to 500 copies only and will put out two full lengths in 2010.  The first one is called "Causers Of This" and will see the light in February.

Download: Gonjasufi: 'Ancestors' (Produced by Flying Lotus)

Gonjasufi is a mystical man. There is little information about him out there, all I can tell you is that he's from San Diego, Calofornia and has a lot of hair, which is mostly truncated into thick dreadlocks. It appears that he's finely intertwined with the Dublab crew and is a firm friend of one of the prolific producer Flying Lotus. 'Ancestors' is featured on Warp's 2010 compilation. He's released music through Milan records, Porter records, Colette and Warp. You can grab Gonjasufi's excellent 7 inch 'Holidays / Candylane' from Bleep. It includes a 20-page gold foil prayer book and is limited to 700 copies worldwide, check it out HERE. Here are a few words about Gonjasufi from our friends at Warp.

"Enter Gonjasufi... a mystical individual caught between the Mojave desert, the LA streets and somewhere more cosmic. His soul-baring vocals are something to behold - described by friend and collaborator Flying Lotus as "Timeless Incredible Filth".

I came accross this randomly. I don't know much about Astro Nautico and this collective of musicians. The EP contains seven tracks, my favourite are both by Kuhn 'Rear Window' and 'Quiet Nights', two fine example of beat making. Almost a hybrid of Flying Lotus and Boxcutter. "After much deliberation, procrastination, hesitation, frustration and some jubilation, we present you with the long-awaited (short-awaited?) Astro Nautico EP #1 - ATLANTICS. All in-house production, with two tracks each from Obey City, Kuhn and Al Gates (+weed). and the best part is...IT'S FREE MOTHAFUCKA."
